In Spain, assisting someone in danger is a legal obligation, not just a moral one. If you witness an accident or a person in serious danger and you can help without putting yourself or others at risk, and you do nothing, not even calling for help you could be charged with omisión del deber de socorro (failure to assist), under Spanish law.

What does “helping” mean?

You don’t have to be a hero or a doctor.

The law expects you to...

  • Protect the area if possible

  • Alert emergency services (call 112)

  • Assist only if it’s safe to do so

This is known as the PAS principle: Proteger, Avisar, Socorrer.

In short: If you see an emergency, you must at least call 112.

Spain is relaxed in many ways — but when it comes to protecting life, the law is very clear.
